Medicare guidelines for cardiac rehab 2021

If you have been diagnosed with heart disease, or had a recent heart attack or heart surgery, Medicare guidelines state that you are eligible for cardiac rehabilitation. Cardiac rehab is a medically supervised program designed to help you recover from a heart event and reduce your risk of future cardiac problems.

The program usually consists of three phases:

Phase I: Inpatient rehabilitation, which takes place in the hospital while you are recovering from your heart event.

Phase II: Outpatient rehabilitation, which takes place after you have been discharged from the hospital.

Cardiac rehab requirements

To be eligible for Medicare-covered cardiac rehab services, you must meet certain requirements. These include being diagnosed with one of the following conditions: coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure or angina pectoris. You must also have had a hospital stay in the last 12 months that resulted in an overnight stay at the hospital and you must be either stable or improving from your condition.

 In addition, you must receive physician approval before starting cardiac rehab and agree to complete at least 75% of scheduled sessions. Finally, you should understand that cardiac rehab is not considered a covered benefit if it is intended primarily to treat no cardiac conditions such as diabetes or obesity.
